The diagram illustrates the phases involved in producing sugar from sugar cane plants.

Generally speaking, sugar production involves seven main stages that start with growing sugar cane plants on farms and culminate in drying and cooling the to form sugar - the final product.

As the process diagram suggests, in the first step, the sugar cane plants are grown in the fields for , and then harvested manually or with the help of agricultural machinery. After that, the sugar cane stalks are crushed in a grinder, resulting in the formation of sugar cane juice. Afterwards, this juice is purified with the use of a limestone filter. Subsequently, the juice is heated in an evaporator device. During this step, the vaporization of water creates the syrup, which is then poured into a centrifuge machine sugar crystals from the syrup. In the final stage, the created crystals are dried and cooled to manufacture the final product - which is sugar.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 7.0

The response covers all seven stages of the process accurately and in the correct order, with a clear overview and strong process vocabulary. Its main limitation is that the reporting stays largely at a descriptive level, with only limited expansion on key details such as the 12-18 month growing period or heat being used in evaporation.

IELTS criteria

How each score was decided

Task Achievement

7.5

The response covers all seven stages of the diagram clearly, accurately, and in sequence, with a valid overview of the process from growing to the final product, and only minor imprecision such as describing the growing period as 'over a year' rather than 12-18 months.

Coherence and Cohesion

7.0

The stages progress logically with a consistent range of sequencing devices, though the linking is at times mechanical and the overview is not explicitly developed with details beyond stage listing.

Lexical Resource

7.0

Process-related vocabulary is appropriately varied and precise, including terms like 'crushed', 'purified', 'evaporator', and 'centrifuge', with only occasional slight awkwardness such as 'crystal syrup'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

7.0

There is a good mix of passives and complex structures with generally accurate punctuation and clause control, though some constructions are slightly loose, as in 'which separates sugar crystals from the syrup'.
