The calculation
How the IELTS Writing score is calculated.
The public scoring rules are simple enough to inspect. The examiner judgement behind each criterion score is the difficult part.
Weight Task 2 twice.
Task 1 contributes one third and Task 2 contributes two thirds of the Writing mark.
Writing = (T1 + 2 × T2) ÷ 3Round the final score.
After the two task scores are combined, the weighted result is rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

How is the IELTS Writing score calculated?
Each task is assessed on four equally weighted criteria. Task 2 then contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing score.
Does Task 2 really count twice?
Yes. Official IELTS preparation guidance describes Task 1 as one third and Task 2 as two thirds of the Writing mark.
Are the four IELTS Writing criteria equally weighted?
Yes. IELTS states that the four criteria are weighted equally within each task, and the task score is their average.
How does this calculator round the estimate?
Task bands mode rounds the weighted result to the nearest half band. Eight-criteria mode keeps both task averages unrounded until the final estimate. The calculator returns a half-band estimate; only IELTS can issue an official score.
Can a high Task 1 score compensate for a low Task 2 score?
Only partly. Because Task 2 carries double weight, a change in Task 2 usually has more effect on the final estimate.
Is this the exact official marking system?
Yes. It follows the official IELTS Writing scoring system: four official criteria are equally weighted within each task, and Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1. The calculator result is an estimate, not an IELTS-issued Test Report Form.
