Response 01

Overall assessment

The response covers all four materials, gives a clear overview and organises the details logically. Its main trends and rankings are largely accurate. However, describing cans as the largest portion of recycled waste confuses a recycling rate with a share of total recycled waste. The detail paragraph would also benefit from showing paper ahead of glass in 1997 and plastic remaining stable after 1997. The paper increase needs clearer units, not a claim that the increase was smaller.

TA

Task Achievement

The response presents a clear overview and covers all four materials with largely supported estimates. However, the opening detail sentence confuses the recycling rate for cans with their share of all recycled waste. The 1997 paper–glass ranking and plastic’s later plateau would improve the selection of detail.

8.0
CC

Coherence and Cohesion

Ideas progress logically from overview to detailed comparisons, with effective use of referencing and cohesive devices such as 'thereafter' and 'in contrast', though some linking is slightly mechanical.

7.0
LR

Lexical Resource

Vocabulary is varied and effective for describing trends, including “registered”, “threefold”, “surged” and “recovered slightly”. Some expressions could be more precise: “the most recycled material” can suggest quantity rather than rate, and “over 20%” would communicate the absolute change more clearly in percentage points.

8.0
GRA

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

A good range of structures is used, including participial and relative clauses, and grammatical accuracy is generally high. The wording “an increase to 12% in the recycling rate” is cumbersome rather than clearly ungrammatical; placing “the recycling rate for plastic” as the subject would make the sentence easier to process.

7.0

What to work on next

Describe percentages as recycling rates within each material, and distinguish percentage-point changes from relative growth. Add the 1997 paper–glass comparison and plastic’s subsequent plateau; use reasonable estimates where the chart has no printed values.
