Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 6.5

The response provides a clear overview of the conversion from industrial use to a residential area, supported by a well-organized description of both maps. Its strongest feature is the controlled use of complex sentences and future constructions. Accuracy of spatial reporting is the main weakness: the road and river positions are reversed in the existing layout, and the medical centre is placed incorrectly. More precise road terminology would also improve the description.

IELTS criteria

How each score was decided

Task Achievement

5.5

The overview clearly identifies the replacement of factories with housing and amenities, and the details cover several major additions. However, the existing road and river are assigned reversed north/south positions, and the medical centre is incorrectly placed in the northwest rather than southeast of the main roundabout.

Coherence and Cohesion

6.5

The response progresses logically from an overview to the present layout and then the proposed development. The repeated branch references in the final paragraph make the road layout less easy to follow, although the overall organization remains clear.

Lexical Resource

6.5

A good range of redevelopment vocabulary appears in expressions such as "residential amenities" and "razing the factories". Some choices lack geographical precision: factories do not "circulate", and the new roads are described as "lanes".

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

7.0

Complex sentences, relative clauses and future passive constructions are generally controlled, with frequent error-free sentences. The grammar sustains the extended description effectively, even where the information or choice of words is less precise.
