Dear Gretel, Hope you are doing great. I am writing this letter to tell you about a fascinating place that I discovered unexpectedly very near to our college. I would like you to join me next time I go there. While cycling , I took a detour from our regular path and cycled along the banks of the stream that passes behind the main college building. After one kilometre or so, I reached a dead end and when I was about to turn, I became anxious to know where the stream goes beyond this as I could see no land . I to see that the small looking stream turned into a beautiful waterfall with cutting through the water and displaying prism colours. The place looked so serene and calm. The most astonishing part was the beauty of nature and I wished to stay there for long. As I know you have an interest in photography, I do not think you should miss taking pictures of this wonderful place. I will be cycling to this place again on Saturday and I would really want you to come along with me and see the beauty of nature for yourself. See you on Saturday! Best wishes, Gemma

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 7.0

The letter covers the location, cycling route, scenery and invitation with relevant detail and a friendly tone. Its narrative is easy to follow, but the entire letter is presented in one paragraph. Occasional word-form and grammatical errors, such as "sun-raises" and "I was gasped", also reduce precision.

IELTS criteria

How each score was decided

Task Achievement

7.0

The letter clearly achieves its friendly purpose and covers all three bullet points with relevant detail about the location, the waterfall scenery, and a concrete invitation to visit on Saturday.

Coherence and Cohesion

6.0

The letter follows a clear narrative from the cycling detour to the waterfall and the invitation, with useful references linking the events. However, the greeting, narrative, invitation and closing are all in one paragraph, which limits the organisation.

Lexical Resource

7.0

Vocabulary is flexible and mostly precise, though some collocations and word forms are inaccurate, such as 'I was gasped' and 'sun-raises'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

7.0

A good range of structures is used with generally accurate control, including complex descriptions of the route and discovery. There are occasional grammatical errors, notably the incorrect passive form "I was gasped" instead of the active verb "I gasped".
