The tables compare the per capita consumption and total production of potatoes in five regions of the world in 2006.

Overall, Europe had the highest level of potato consumption per person, while Africa had the lowest. In contrast, Asia was the leading producer in terms of total output, whereas South and Central America produced the least.

Regarding consumption, Europeans consumed by far the most potatoes, at 96.1 kilograms per person. This was followed by North America, where the figure stood at 57.9 kg. Consumption levels in Asia (25.8 kg) and South and Central America (23.6 kg) were considerably lower. Africa recorded the smallest per capita consumption, at only 14.1 kg.

In terms of production, Asia led globally with 131.2 million tonnes of potatoes, slightly more than Europe, which produced 126.3 million tonnes. North America generated a much smaller quantity at 24.7 million tonnes. The two lowest producers were Africa and South and Central America, with 16.4 and 15.6 million tonnes respectively.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 8.0

The report covers the five regions accurately, clearly distinguishes per-person consumption from total production, and includes a well-formed overview. Language and sentence structures are controlled. The detailed figures could support one further grouped comparison of the two dominant producers with the remaining regions, but the existing account is already clear and effective.
