Some people believe that bicycles have many advantages, while others argue that they have more disadvantages. Both perspectives have valid points, and this essay will discuss both before presenting my own view.

On the one hand, bicycles offer numerous benefits. They are environmentally friendly since they do not produce harmful emissions like cars or motorcycles. Additionally, cycling is an excellent form of exercise, promoting physical fitness and reducing health issues such as obesity and heart disease. Bicycles are also cost-effective, as they are cheaper to buy and maintain compared to motor vehicles. For instance, in many European countries, cycling is a popular daily activity, which helps reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

On the other hand, some people argue that bicycles have several disadvantages. They are not suitable for long distances or in regions with extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain or snow. Cycling can also be unsafe in cities with heavy traffic or poor road infrastructure, increasing the risk of accidents. Furthermore, commuting by bicycle can be time-consuming compared to cars or public transport, which may not be practical for people with tight schedules.

In my opinion, the advantages of bicycles outweigh the disadvantages, particularly in urban areas with proper cycling infrastructure. Promoting cycling can improve public health, reduce environmental pollution, and offer a cost-effective mode of transport. However, for long-distance travel or extreme weather, alternative modes of transport may be necessary.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 7.0

The response addresses both perspectives clearly and states a definite personal opinion with logical development and relevant supporting detail. Its strongest aspect is the well-organised, balanced argument structure, while the main limitation is that it falls sixteen words short of the required length and relies on somewhat generic, conventional ideas rather than deeper analysis.
